You’ve probably heard that you can only get where you want to be if you know where you’re going. This statement is as true now as the first time it was said. So how do you come to know where you’re going, so you can get where you want to be?

To start with, goals are crucial. When we set goals, what we’re really trying to do is to bring each piece of our lives in line with our overall vision for ourselves. Using a powerful vision-setting process can help you set more effective goals since you can chart a course that will take you toward and support your vision.

Do you have a vision for each segment of your life? Do you know where you’re headed spiritually, socially, relationally, physically, financially, and more?

Use this process to help you create a vision that works for you:

  1. Write down your vision for a particular aspect of your life. Write a couple of paragraphs describing what you’d like to have or be. There’s no right or wrong. In fact, you probably won’t precisely articulate your dreams the very first time you try the exercise. A reasonable guess is a good place to start.
  • In writing your vision, avoid focusing on what you don’t want, because this will only bring about more of that. Turn your back on negativity and focus on what you do want to bring about.

  • For example, if you want more money: Avoid wording your statement like: “I don’t want to be poor anymore.” Instead, envision what it would be like to be rich, which is what you want, and write about what that would be like for you.

  • Although you may feel challenged when first learning to focus on what you want, it gets easier. Plus, the rewards are spectacular when you can do it consistently. You’ll start to notice that your life seems as if you can change it at will, which you can.
  • Visualize. Read your vision statement 2-3 times a day and imagine that aspect of your life matches your vision perfectly. How does your vision make you feel? Are you really excited and enthusiastic? Is it appealing to you on all levels? This shouldn’t take more than 60 seconds to do each time.
  • Refine. If you feel really good about your vision, that’s great. If not, now is the time to make some alterations. Continue refining the image of your dream life until doing your visualization feels spectacular. Re-write each new version.
  • At this point, you may be wondering when this process ever ends. Fortunately, it never ends. Your vision will forever be changing slightly throughout your life, which is good, since your desires will also change over time.
  • Review your vision daily and ensure that it continues to attract you. This will rapidly usher change into your life. In turn, these changes will demonstrate that you’re actually moving towards that vision.

  • Create separate vision statements for all the areas of your life. Consider your finances, relationships, adventure, health, social life, and spirituality. If you can get all these visions to look just the way you want, imagine what your life will look like!

If you don’t take responsibility for your life, you won’t be happy with the outcome. If you leave your life up to luck and the generosity of others, the universe is likely to beat you down. An enjoyable life doesn’t happen by accident.

You must take responsibility for your outcomes, good or bad. You must take responsibility for your past and your future, good or bad.

Learn how to take control of your life today and steer it in the direction that you want to go!

You can develop responsibility for your life with these activities:

  1. Avoid blaming others. Were your parents’ good parents? Maybe not. What parenting school did they attend? Is your boss a jerk? Maybe. There are lots of things in life that aren’t your fault but are still your responsibility to manage. No one else is going to do it for you.

If you’re honest with yourself, your life would be infinitely better if you could just go back in time and make one or two different decisions.

4. Schedule your time. How you choose to spend your time each day is the most important decision you can make that day. How you choose to spend your time determines your future. Take responsibility for your life by choosing to utilize your time wisely.


5. Manage your thoughts. Your thoughts impact your actions. If you want to take responsibility for your life, it’s necessary to manage your thoughts.

You can think about whatever you’d like to think about. Your brain also produces random thoughts, but you have the power to ignore them or to pay attention to them.

6. Take all the blame. The most effective way to live is to take all the
responsibility. Maybe your ex was an evil person, but you did allow that person into your life. Whatever is going wrong in your life, take responsibility for it.

If you’re responsible for the challenges you face, you can do something about them.

8. Acknowledge your flaws. You have plenty of flaws, and that’s okay. Everyone has flaws. Failing to recognize them only leads to failure and frustration. Fix your flaws if you can. Otherwise, avoid any course of action that will result in your flaws working against you.

9. Acknowledge your strengths. It’s just as important to realize your strengths and use them to your advantage. Milk your strengths for all they’re worth!

As an adult, no one is ever going to care about your life more than you do. It’s a big responsibility, but there’s no one else to do it. Having a great life is up to you!

The zen habit of stillness

You probably have friends and acquaintances who are always rushing about and complaining about their lack of alone time. Maybe they don’t even say anything about it because they don’t know any other way to be. Every moment, they’re busy. Maybe you’re one of them.

If you examine the lives of overly busy people, you’ll probably find that they’re not contented, happy people. There’s always so much to do and so little time. Perhaps you’re reading this because you feel rushed yourself and want to slow down and reap the benefits of being still.

Two Kinds of Stillness

You can be quiet in body and quiet in mind. Both are important. Being still physically saves you a lot of energy and effort. You feel less exhausted by the end of the day. Mental quietness has a similar effect on your psychological, intellectual, and emotional energy.

All you have to do to achieve stillness of body is to finish your chores and then relax. Even while you’re completing your tasks, you can conserve energy by using little movement. To get an idea of how to do this, just watch a monk in action. Or notice how a cat relaxes.

Stillness of mind is more challenging to achieve. However, this kind of quietness is much more critical to overall contentment.  

How do you feel when you get some shocking news? How about when you finally reach your target at work, win an award, or find yourself suddenly in a crisis? You feel a rush of adrenaline and you’re off, letting off steam in a gush of emotion, words or action.

So if this is such a natural response to big changes, why do you need to cultivate stillness? When you’re in the middle, when you’re centered, you can see both ends of the spectrum.

When you refrain from reacting in an extreme way, you can control your response to the situation. You can be objective. Most importantly, you can learn from your circumstances and use them for self-development.

From another perspective, when you’ve cultivated internal quietness, you’re less likely to face extreme ups and downs.

Try these tips to develop a still mind:

1.     Stop. In an extreme situation, pull away from the circumstance for a moment. Take a deep breath before you react.

2.     Listen. Listen carefully to what’s being said. If your mind jumps the gun with words you feel compelled to speak, bring it back to the moment. Return your attention to what the other is saying.

3.     Think. Contemplate why you’re facing the situation. Did you play a part in creating it? Is the other simply mirroring you? Is there something you need to learn from this circumstance?

If you take these steps, you’ll be able to avoid overreacting or reacting negatively in haste. This means your response, if and when it does come, will be the right one for the circumstances and for you.

 The Importance of Silence

Another way to develop mental stillness is to practice silence. Speak only when necessary. Speak only when you have something of consequence to say or something that will help the other.

Before you speak, examine your motivation for saying what you want to say. Is it to further the welfare of the other? Or is it to praise yourself or prove that you’re right and the other wrong? A need to always be right is the basis of much conflict.

Moreover, when you’re habitually silent, your words have more effect. People pay attention when you speak.

As you work toward greater self-awareness, try cultivating internal stillness. Just follow these guidelines as a start. As you practice, you’ll realize many rewards.

I see the world through fresh eyes

​I alter my perspective of the world each day. I find wonder in familiar things and recognize the extraordinary nature of ordinary events.

I slow down and notice the miracles that are occurring all the time. Caterpillars transform into butterflies. Tiny acorns grow into mighty oak trees. I become grateful and develop a sense of awe.

The earth provides resources that keep me alive without any effort on my part. I receive food, oxygen, water, and sunlight.

I seek a personal connection with the events I observe. I explore important memories. I think about how I can contribute to the world.

I put aside old assumptions. If I have a disagreement with a coworker, I accept their truth so we can view each other as friends. It does not mean that I have to agree with them.  I just have to understand that everyone has their own perspective of life from where they are at.

I pay attention to all my senses. Sights become more vivid and I enjoy my commutes to the job sites because I am grateful that I still have a job and my own business.  Sometimes I leave my house real early in the mornings and I observe everything: the sun rising to flood the world with light and warmth, the clouds forming, the fog lifting and all the wildlife that is out forging for food as I also respond to aromas, textures, flavors, and sounds.

Some of my best lessons come from children and animals. I have had dogs and their unconditional love is a constant reminder to love with no expectation of return.  Dogs teach me just to enjoy the time that I have with the ones that I love. Right now, I have a cat who teaches me the joy of napping in a sunny spot, with no stress or cares of any kind to trouble my slumber. It is said that if you want to get a new outlook on life, be sure to look, through the eyes of a child.  Children find wonder everywhere and teach you to view even the mundane events of the day with awe.

Today I rediscover the world. I look at everything as if it was my first time and I appreciate the significance of all that surrounds me.
